• Peter Jackson

By David Martinez / Boxing Historian
I consider myself truly blessed to have seen over the past fifty years all the boxing greats. I have written various articles ranking different boxers in their primes, but I feel compelled to write now about a division in boxing that hardly anyone ever talks about – light heavyweight. […]

I would like to share my collection of fifty years of boxing as dmboxing.com approaches its fifth year this month. It’s been a pleasure to be able to provide you with boxing information and I would like to thank you for making this website one of your choices in boxing.

  • Greatest Boxer “Pound for Pound”… Ever

By David Martinez / Boxing Historian I have been asked many times “who is the greatest boxer of all time in any weight division at the height of his career” and that answer is the easiest for me to come up with – Sugar Ray Robinson. I could go on and on about his career but I will go on record to say that at his pinnacle years he was clearly the best. I was fortunate to meet him at a local amateur boxing show in 1986 where I was a referee for the kids. […]

"Bringing the UK to you"

By David Martinez / Boxing Historian

I am so very delighted to be able to provide a new website link from the United Kingdom, on to my website, for my growing fan base.
Let me introduce Brian Hughes, MBE-boxing coach for 45 years from the Collyhurst & Moston Lads Club, and author of many sporting books, which are offered on his site. Here is a short bio sent to me from Brian:

=================================

I am Brian Hughes, 68 years of age. Born and raised in Collyhurst, a rough inner city area of Manchester.

I boxed amateur but trained with the professionals in Jack Bates’ gym. (I saw my idols there, Johnny King, Jock McAvoy and Jackie Brown, these are the 3 who I wrote books about)

At 21 I started coaching boxing at Collyhurst Lads Club in Manchester. I’ve been Chief Coach here for 45 years.

In this time I have produced Schoolboy, Youth and Senior ABA champions and 2 of my lads were in the Olympic Games and as a professional trainer produced British, European, Commonwealth and eight world champions.

Away from the gym, I married my beautiful wife Rosemarie 35 years ago and have 4 great children who are now all married. I have one grandchild, the light of my life, Joseph.

After leaving school not being able to hardly read or write I have now written ten boxing and soccer books which I am very proud of.
My interests are of course boxing and football (Soccer) and my family. I love doing the researching for my books and can spend hours in the libraries engrossed in newspaper articles. Now I am learning how to use the Internet to do this too.

In 2000, I was honoured by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip for my services to the Community and received an MBE. My whole family came with me to London to see that special day where I met Prince Charles, who was very charming.
It is one of the highlights of my life and I shall never forget that day.

My favourite recollections are fighters from the forties through to the late seventies and would love to hear from anyone interested in fighters from this period.

I am still coaching, although due to illness, I have cut down on my hours and I am hoping that I can get one of my current boxers to take over the running of the club soon so I can spend more time on technique and my books.

My daughter Rachael, runs my website, as I am still a bit of a techno-phobe, however, she does pass on all my emails and messages.
We set up the site so people can see the “real” me and get information in my books.

This is a pleasure to come into the United States to you on a link, courtesy of www.DavidMartinezBoxing.com and I in turn have added David on to my website link in the UK.

Please visit my website at www.brianhughesmbe.co.uk/

You can also look on the right-hand side of the home page under “Blogroll” and can click on my site which is listed among other links.

Respectfully, Brian Hughes

Nice story – I was with Lance Lewis who was trained by Brian a few weeks ago – he showed me a piece Brian wrote about him.
