After watching the Mayweather – Cotto fight, I noticed that on more than one occasion “Money” took a breather and let Cotto fight and perhaps win a couple of rounds. If Mayweather really believes he is better than Pac Man, why doesn’t he fight him? What does he have to lose, well only the zero at the end of his record, which can cost him dearly. Am I the only writer out there who believes the time has come for “Money” to put up or shut up….Color me unimpressed with his showing vs. Cotto.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao will be fighting Tim Bradley, in what may well be another yawner. It’s not that Pac Man is taking an easy fight, it’s just that there is only one big name out there, and it’s a guy named Mayweather.

I’m not analyzing this fight today, but on the surface I see nothing that Bradley brings to the table that can sidetrack Pacquiao. But I’ll do an in-depth report as that fight draws closer.***

Meanwhile, as promised, I’ll give my picks on the top boxing folks who have influenced our sport, good or bad, over the past 75 years.

Right on top of my list, as a boxer, it has to be Jack Johnson, who did more to influence minorities to perform not only in boxing but all sports, than anyone else before him. He was of course the first black heavyweight champion.

There are others who should be mentioned as positive forces in boxing: fighters like Muhammad Ali; Ernie Terrell; Floyd Patterson; Oscar de la Hoya; Christy Martin; and I apologize to all those I left out in the interest of space.

In the non-boxer area, my thought would be Nat Fleisher and the late Bert Sugar, whose names will always be part of the journalistic presence and positive influences on our sport.

There are others who won’t be remembered for their skills in the ring, but on the apron, Eddie Futch and Angelo Dundee to name just a few.

I left out the promoters and their publicists mainly because they can and often are listed as both positive and negative influences. I have my opinions, but mine are as good (or bad) as anyone else.

I will add a few people like the late boxing writer Jack Welsh, a personal friend for many, many years. Jin Carlin, who is always on the sidelines, always more than willing to lend a hand.

And let’s not forget those who spend their time and money getting the stories out on the web. They also promote the fights and fighters.***

One final note, while I am not a fan of MMA , probably because I’m an old boxing guy and don’t accept change very well. I will give full credit to MMA for being not only a money maker, but since it’s rapid rise in popularity, more and more gyms are opening and the kids are getting off the streets again. It’s also a positive influence on boxing for just that reason.

Glove 2 Glove:

Please say prayers for the soul of Caleb Garcino, an eight year old Godson of boxing writer Daxx Kahn.

Prayers are also requested for the soul of Andy “Hawaiian Punch” Ganigan, who passed away at the young age of 59.

Prayers for the return to health of outstanding boxing guys Alex “The Bronx Bomber” Ramos and boxing historian Tony Triem.

Please pray for my Aussie mate and Glove2Glove member John MacDougall, who had to deal with the recent passing of his wife of many years Gwen, who is in a nursing home John, a former Commissioner is having problems after a hip replacement surgery. Both need your prayers for recovery and inner strength.

Also prayers for the recovery of outstanding referee Mills Lane and Denis Wilcox.

Please say prayers for Phill Grazide of Santa Rosa, CA. a big supporter of amateur boxing, who is suffering the crippling effects of rheumatoid arthritis.

Needless to say we need prayers for the return to health of former champ Gerald McClellan, who is confined to wheelchairs.

On behalf of these great fighters who have given their all in our great sport, we thank you for your ongoing prayers.

Do you know of any boxing people in need of spiritual uplifting and/or prayers? Just drop us a line. Membership is free to all and no one will ever contact you except for other prayer requests. Your name will not suddenly appear on anyone’s mailing list. In short, there is no obligation. Every prayer request is most welcome and I know the recipient will appreciate it.

Why? Because it’s healing to know that other people care, even about people they don’t know, and have the knowledge that God listens!

To join the Glove2Glove prayer group, or just request much needed prayers, drop Dave Wilcox a line at ubtdave@earthlink.net

Glove2Glove, which has been a long-time integral part of the defunct Ringsports.com magazine and website.
A lot of sports will be televised this Saturday, and while nothing, including the Kentucky Derby (wish I could get down there again) is easy to pick, the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto might be the easiest, as they will be featured at the MGM in Vegas for a 12-rounder for Mayweather’s WBA super welterweight title on PPV.

It’s not that Mayweather is unbeatable (although he has been up till now), except for Manny Pacquiao, there is not a lot of talent out there, and I won’t hold my breath waiting for that fight to ever happen.

So exactly what tools does Cotto bring into the fight? Age is one advantage. At 31, Cotto brings a four year advantage here. Neither is a big enough puncher to expect a quick KO, although both have more than ample power to wear the other down.

Cotto has other problems, mainly Mayweather’s speed (foot and hand), his two reach disadvantage to Floyd makes it imperative to get inside, and to get inside you first have to catch Mayweather or slow him down with a power punch or two.

On paper, Floyd, 42-0 (26), it seems like an easy mis-match. I just can see no way that Cotto can out-speed him.

Mayweather should be able to land enough punches to either stop Cotto late, or win an easy unanimous decision.***

Time Magazine recently had an issue listing the most influential people in the world. I’d like to take that item to the readers of this column. Please e-mail me your top 10 boxers in the past 75 years and why. I also feel that the same poll should include the top 10 non-fighters who have had a major influence on the sport. Your help will be appreciated and my personal choices for both will appear in this column next week.
Rusty Rubin, formerly the award winning managing editor of Ringsports.com as well as now defunct Nevada Boxing and Ringsports Magazine, is the author of three highly acclaimed boxing books! “Woozel, Boxing and Me”, “Off the Canvas” and “Billy Soose, the Champion Time Forgot” co-authored by Tom Donelson. These books are all available at Authorhouse.com, and all major book retailers. They are all more than worth the small purchase price, or contact me via this website for a personally autographed copy at a small extra shipping charge.

RUSTY WOULD LIKE TO URGE ALL HIS FRIENDS TO LIST THE FOLLOWING INFO ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PAGE AS WELL AS YOUR E-MAIL. “HAVING BEEN BLESSED WITH SO MANY GREAT PEOPLE IN MY LIFE, I HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO GET INVOLVED WITH NETWORKING, I’MJUST TOO DAMN OLD FOR THAT”.

HENCEFORTH, (or at least for the current quarter) ALL PROFITS FROM THE SALE OF ANY OR ALL OF THESE BOOKS WILL GO TO THE SUSAN G. KOMAN FOUNDATION, AND BE USED TO FIND A CURE FOR BREAST CANCER. . I ALSO CHALLENGE ALL OTHER JOURNALISTS, BOXING OR OTHERWISE, TO DO WHAT THEY CAN TO SUPPORT ME IN THIS EFFORT. IT’S ALSO CHANCE TO CHANGE THE PUBLIC OPINION OF THE PRESS AND OUR SPORT, AS WELL AS DOING SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR WORLD.

Together we may be able to find a cure for this dread disease and result in a knockout win for the sport of boxing. Here’s a wonderful chance for you to enjoy a good read for a great cause.

“The sale of any or all of these very enjoyable books will help an important cause (breast cancer research). I personally ask everyone, if they do nothing else, to pass this information along the social networks you use.”

Please take note that my next book will be about “MIRACLES” PERSONAL, OR OTHERWISE, and I would appreciate any submissions you may deem worthy. Of course your privacy (names) can and will be withheld by request.

I now have some time to try to finish this latest work, which, God willing, will bring the world so much closer to finding a cure for cancer. Please send me your miracles at rustyrubin@sbcglobal.net

Please allow me to recommend, two other great books, the “Arc of Boxing” by Mike Silver and “My Life among the Icons” by Johnny Ortiz.

In these hard economic times, any or all of these books will make an excellent and inexpensive presents to the boxing fan(s) in your life. They are especially appreciated gifts if the recipient is tired of watching re-runs of sit-coms and the far-less than significant reality shows. In short, read a great book and support a great cause.

Where’s the “Gillette Cavalcade of Sports” when you need it? Make your friend or loved one ‘look sharp’, ‘feel sharp’ and be ‘sharp.’ So how are you fixed for books? You’d better check’ to parrot an old commercial.

I now have some time to try to finish my latest work, which, God willing, will bring the world so much closer to finding a cure for cancer. Please send me your miracles at rustyrubin@sbcglobal.net

You and the book-gift recipient will be glad you made the right choice (or the write choice)!***

Finally, “My 2012 New Year’s resolution was to spend the rest of my life helping others, and I really need your hell to do that.. Please get in the ring with me to add power to all the voices that are crying out for a cure to dread diseases.

Keep punching, always….Rusty

In Atlantic City on April 28, “Bad” Chad Dawson faces a rematch with “The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins who, despite his age, 47, keeps on fighting.

Despite his age, Hopkins can still fight, boasting a 52-5 record with 32 knockouts.

Hopkins last fight, against the same Chad Dawson, wound up as a two round non-decision in Los Angeles. Verdicts like that happen when an orthodox fighter meets a southpaw, which Dawson is.

Dawson 29, has a record of 30-1 with 17 coming by was of KO. His only loss was to Jean Pascal.
Looking for an advantage here is hard. They both are 6’1. and Dawson has an inch and a half reach advantage.

While it’s not hard to visualize another clash of heads here, it’s not something that usually happens in back to back fights.

Neither fighter shows a lot of one-punch KO power, so I have to believe it will go to a decision.

Sooner or later Father Time catches up to all of us. While it’s hard to go against Hopkins, youth must be served.

Dawson by a hard-fought decision.***

A very interesting and possibly very entertaining match this week, from Mexico City, for the WBO interim lightweight title.

What makes this bout interesting is that one fighter Serhiy Fedochenko is from the Ukraine and has fought all is fights, except his last one there. I haven’t seen him, but clearly there is some confusion as to his first name. Is it Serhiy of Sergey. I’ll go with Sergey who enters this tough match against Juan Manuel Marquez, with a record of 30-1 with 13 knockouts.

Fedortenko has not fought any ‘names’ and that’s what makes it tough to find a way to make a solid pick.

On paper, Juan Manuel Marquez is the only name that viewers will know and he is fighting on his home turf.

Marquez 38, one of the best Mexican fighters that ever donned a pair of gloves is aging a bit, but has never lost the heart that Hispanic fighters are known for. He has taken on all the iron in his division and gave them all his best.

Marquez enters the fray with a 53-6-1- mark and has 39 KO’s. One of those losses was to Chris John in Indonesia, a fight everyone who saw it (except the judges) say Marquez one. JMM will probably call it a career soon, but most fighters who retire don’t stay retired for very long.

Marquez has much the same problem this writer has, in never having seen his seven year younger opponent and not knowing what to expect. It could be the fight that upsets are made of.

But if Fedorchenko is seeking an upset, he came to the wrong place to fight the wrong opponent. Marquez is still one of the toughest fighters around and is fighting on his home turf.

Fedortenko may surprise Marquez but he certainly will not lost to him. Marquez by stoppage.

This is catch-up time as there are no major fights this week.

Last week I noted that HBO judge and commentator Harold Lederman will be inducted into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame.

I located the rest of the list that I obviously couldn’t locate at the time of my last writing. Along with Lederman being inducted in the non-participant category are Jimmy Glenn; Ray Arcel; Gil Clancey; Steve Acunto; Arthur Mercante Sr., Bill Gallo and Nat Fleisher. In the participant category we find: : Mike Tyson; Sugar Ray Robinson; Riddick Bowe; Vito Antofurtmo; Mike McCallum; Tony Canzoneri; Carmen Basilio; Benny Leonard; Gene Tunney; Carlos Ortiz; Emile Griffith and Jake LaMotta.

A lot of old friends getting their just rewards. Congratulations to all.

The event will be held at Russo’s on the Bay in Howard Beach, NY…Doors will open at 12:30 and more info can be had by calling 716-728-4862.***

I write this column early, not because I played ‘favorites’ in last weeks picks, but because boxing lost a friend in Bert Randolph Sugar, who past away from lung cancer.

Boxing lost a lot when it lost it’s best known spokesman and most of us in the media lost a good friend.

Speaking for myself, I had spent many enjoyable times with Bert, and although I haven’t seen him for about six years, he always had a warm hug and lit cigar for me. (fortunately, I had stopped smoking many years earlier). I have a lot of stories about Bert and if I can locate the issue of Ring Sports that I did an interview with him in, I will publish it again on this site….

I remember the time when we were both inducted into the North West Boxing Hall of Fame in Idaho. Bert was his usual dashing self and it gave us some time to recollect on the years past.

Bert was an old friend to me, and old friendly face to boxing fans and so-much more. In this day when boxing is going the way of the Great Auk, we really need more Bert Sugars to get by.

Rest in peace my old friend. May the good Lord keep you in his care until we meet again.

Glove 2 Glove:

Prayers requested for the soul of Bert Sugar, 74 and top trainer Jerry “Ace” Miller.

Prayers for the return to health of outstanding boxing guys Alex “The Bronx Bomber” Ramos and boxing historian Tony Triem.

Prayers for the complete return to good health to my old friend, promoter, and ex-wrestler Jack ‘Moe’ Smith who had complete reconstructive knee surgery a couple of weeks back. Moe’s a fighter and making a complete recovery.

Please pray for my Aussie mates and Glove2Glove member John MacDougall, who had to deal with health problems for his wife of many years Gwen, who is in a nursing home John, a former Commissioner is having problems after a hip replacement surgery. Both need your prayers for recovery and inner strength.

Also prayers for the recovery of Mills Lane and Denis Wilcox.

If you know of any boxing people in need of spiritual uplifting and/or prayers? Just drop us a line. Membership is free to all and no one will ever contact you except for prayer requests.
HBO judge Harold Lederman will be inducted into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame. Congratulations to an old friend and the others who deservedly will be inducted with him.

Although Nevada has become the Mecca of boxing in the U.S. there is no Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. I guess it’s understandable as I find it hard to find any native born people worthy, except maybe Gina Carano.

Nevada has had some great refs like Mills Lane and judges who were born elsewhere. The same can be said of the many well known writers of past and present. If being native born is the criteria, it may be a long time until there are enough people qualified.***

Two watch able fights this weekend, although not necessarily exciting ones. Both are hard to figure.

NBC Sports will be showing a card from Brooklyn New York, featuring native son Zab Judah in the main event. The fight is for the WBC lightweight crown.

While I can’t see Judah losing before the hometown crowd, he is 34 years old and his best days seem far behind them. Add to that equation the fact that he faces undefeated 24 year old Vincent Paris (22-0 (15), and you just may have the ingredients for an upset.

Judah, a southpaw who hasn’t shown a lot of power in his 4` wins (only three via the KO route), is a good boxer but clearly has seen better days, and perhaps better opponents.

Paris is a harder hitter and seems to be on his way up. Still it’s hard to see him winning a decision over Judah in Brooklyn. My guess is he needs a KO.

Paris by TKO midway.

The other fight of interest takes place in Houston Texas, for the WBC super lightweight title and features another aging performer in Erik Morales taking on Danny Garcia.

Morales is 35, but is an exciting, in your face type fighter. Garcia, 23, is a bit taller, but gives up three inches in reach to Morales.

Since Morales likes to fight inside, the reach advantage here may be negligible. Hard to say what “El Terrible” has left in his tank. One thing is certain, He will make this an entertaining and exciting fight.
Maybe I’m a bit prejudiced here, but I’ve been a fan of Morales ever since I first saw him fight. I think he has to stop Garcia and will late in the fight.

Glove 2 Glove:
Prayers requested for the soul of Nestor Espinosa, the long-time trainer of Roberto Duran.

Glad to be back after a short absence. Fortunately, for me, but not for boxing, I did not miss very much of importance.

On Feb. 4, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, what shapes up to be a great doubleheader takes place and one that will be shown on HBO.

In one match,, for the WBC middleweight crown heavy fisted Marco Antonio Rubio puts his record of 53-5 1 (46) against fast and undefeated champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. 44-0-1 (31).

Rubio, 31, is shorter and slower than Chavez, but is the bigger puncher. He also has a three inch reach disadvantage.

Great fight, I like Chavez via TKO late.

In the other bout, Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. takes on fast, hard hitting Nonito Donaire from the Philippines.

Vasquez at 27 is two years younger and shows one loss, that to Jorge Arce last year in Vegas. His record is an impressive 21-1 with 18 KO’s.

Donaire, 29, is a southpaw with a two inch reach advantage. His record is 27-1 (18).

Take Donaire by a late TKO, in another great match-up.

Glove 2 Glove:

We lost five boxing guys since my last article (and probably more that I wasn’t notified of). Prayers are asked for the souls of Angelo Dundee, 90, Brian Curtis, 74, Goody Petronelli 88, referee Wayne Kelly and Don Fullmer.

Interesting an important fight at Madison Square Garden this week, on HBO PPV, and should be worth the price.

Miguel Cotto, from Puerto Rico lays his WBA Jr. Middleweight title on the line against hard punching (particularly with loaded gloves) Antonio Margarito from Mexico.

Since the fight will be in New York, you know the fans will be heavily in favor of Cotto, 36-2, (29), who, at 31, is two years younger than his foe, who defeated him in Las Vegas.

Margarito, 28-7, has a big height and reach advantage always seems to have problems with his defense, or lack of. If Cotto gets inside, consistently, he’ll have Margarito fighting off the ropes and canvas most of the fight.

I figure that will be the case here. Cotto by decision.

Glove 2 Glove:

We lost two great heavyweight champs recently in Joe Frazier and Ron Lyle. Please say prayers for their souls.

Prayers for the soul of legendary cutman Joe Sousa who was one of the best in the business, if not the best.

Prayers also asked for the souls of Howard Harpst, father of Steve, a well known sculpture artist in Southern California and former champ Hector Lopez who also left us and boxing a sadder place.

We ask for prayers for Allen Syers, former fighter, who is now battling the toughest opponent he has ever faced, cancer.

A young lad, Kyle Thompson Jr. was having some health issues and with your prayers has gotten better….Sincere thanks.

Prayers for the return to health for Hall of fame promoter Don Fraser; who is recovering after undergoing some serious surgery.

Prayers for good health and birthday wishes for boxing lady and good friend Shelley Williams of Las Vegas.

Prayers are requested for the health of outstanding trainer Joe Sousa, who is fighting the fight of his life against cancer.

Prayers for the complete return to good health to my old friend, promoter, and ex-wrestler Jack ‘Moe’ Smith who had complete reconstructive knee surgery a couple of weeks back. Moe’s a fighter and making a complete recovery.

Prayers for the soul of Audrey Talmo who passed away last week. Audrey was the wife of solid boxing guy and Glove2Glove member Ed.

Also prayers for the recovery of Mills Lane and Denis Wilcox.

Needless to say we need prayers for the return to health of former champ Gerald McClellan, who is confined to wheelchairs.

Since there’s a bit of a lull in major events right now, I heave decided to use most of this space to answering many questions that I get over the course of a year.

The most frequent question asked of me is; ‘is Ring Sports Magazine or the website up for sale’? The simple answer is yes, if the buyer can prove to me that he can maintain the quality we had over the years. It’s not the money here, but the hard-earned reputation. If agreement on a sale is reached, I will return whatever original investments there were, and donate the remainder to the Susan Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

‘If my best friend “Woozel” died of colon cancer, why am I working on helping those with breast cancer’? The answer to that one is simple; I believe that once a gene is found to cure breast cancer, we are that much closer to the cure of many other cancers. Cancer is an ugly disease and it’s long past time that it is wiped off the face of the Earth. Even if we can save just one life, we are doing a very important thing as well as sending an important message.

‘Are back issues of the magazine available and if so, for how much money’? Most back issues are and the cost is $1.00 per issue plus postage. I’ve tried to keep them as it’s still my memory and my gift to the sport of boxing. If you want a specific issue, we’ll try to find it for you for an extra 50 cents for the labor. We many even have pictures of your favorite fighter….We can check that out for you and charge accordingly…Again, in any event ALL proceeds after the labor of finding and mailing, will go to the Omen Foundation.

A lot of people want to know ‘how I see the Pacquiao – Mayweather fight’. Simply put, although it’s a mega fight, it probably will never happen. Mayweather doesn’t seem to want to step up to the plate, and if he ever does, he probably will be a lot older and slower than he is today.

‘Am I officially retired as a sports/boxing journalist’? If by that you mean do I no longer get paid for my hard efforts? It’s always been a labor of love. Simply, I’ve never gotten paid more than travel allowances and a small stipend for food and board. I love the sport and the people in it. However, physically, there is no way I can cover any live fights any longer. These old back injuries just won’t hold up for long.

‘What do I consider my greatest award’? Truthfully, while I’ve been honored many times, my greatest reward is working with young talented writers and seeing them move up in the journalistic world. I’d like to think I gave them the edge they needed to get over the top.

‘Best fighter I ever saw’? While I met the great Sugar Ray Robinson, I never saw him ‘live’ in the ring. I did however see Archie Moore, live, and I’ll go with him as my top choice.

And another frequent question I am asked, ‘do I see a bright future for boxing’?
With the advent of various forms of MMA and the closing of most ring publications as well as boxing gyms around us, it’s hard to see a very bright future for our sport. But I remain an optimist. We’ve been down before and we’ve always been able to beat the ten count. It may not come in my lifetime, but boxing will again see resurgence.

Glove 2 Glove:

Prayers for the soul of legendary cut-man Joe Sousa who was one of the best in the business, if not the best.

Prayers also asked for the souls of Howard Harpst, father of Steve, a well known sculpture artist in Southern California and former champ Hector Lopez who also left us and boxing a sadder place.

We ask for prayers for Allan Syers, former lightweight fighter, who is now battling the toughest opponent he has ever faced, cancer.

Please pray for my Aussie mates and Glove2Glove member John MacDougall, who had to deal with health problems for his wife of many years Gwen, who is in a nursing home John, a former Commissioner is having problems after a hip replacement surgery. Both need your prayers for recovery and inner strength.

Prayers for the soul of Audrey Talmo who passed away last week. Audrey was the wife of solid boxing guy and Glove2Glove member Ed.
On behalf of these great fighters who have given their all in our great sport, we thank you for your ongoing prayers.

To join Glove2Glove, or just request needed prayers, drop Dave Wilcox a line at ubtdave@earthlink.net

Glove2Glove, which has been a long-time integral part of the defunct Ringsports.com magazine and website. It is a program I wish to continue a long after I have left the sport and this earth. I want to thank Dave and Deborah Wilcox, who have offered to take over the program and promised to continue it indefinitely. This generous offer means a lot to me. We always welcome new members.***

Thanks and God bless.***

Rusty Rubin, formerly the award winning managing editor of Ringsports.com as well as the now defunct Ringsports Magazine, is the author of three highly acclaimed boxing books! “Woozel, Boxing and Me”, “Off the Canvas” and “Billy Soose, the Champion Time Forgot” co-authored by Tom Donelson. These books are all available at Authorhouse.com, and all major book retailers. They are all more than worth the purchase price, or contact me via this website for a personally autographed copy at a small extra charge.

RUSTY WOULD LIKE TO URGE ALL HIS FRIENDS TO LIST THE FOLLOWING INFO ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PAGE AS WELL AS YOUR E-MAIL. “HAVING BEEN BLESSED WITH SO MANY GREAT PEOPLE IN MY LIFE, I HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO GET INVOLVED WITH NETWORKING, JUST TOO DAMN OLD FOR THAT”.

HENCEFORTH, ALL PROFITS FROM THE SALE OF ANY OR ALL OF THESE BOOKS WILL GO TO THE SUSAN KOMAN FOUNDATION. I ALSO CHALLENGE ALL OTHER JOURNALISTS, BOXING OR OTHERWISE, TO DO WHAT THEY CAN IN THIS EFFORT. IT’S A CHANCE TO CHANGE THE PUBLIC OPION OF THE PRESS, AS WELL AS DOING SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT FOR OUR WORLD.

Together we can find a cure for this dread disease and a knockout win for the sport of boxing. Here’s a wonderful chance for you to enjoy a good read for a great cause.

“The sale of any or all of these very enjoyable books will help an important cause (breast cancer research). I personally ask everyone, if they do nothing else, to pass this information along the social networks you use.”

In these hard economic times, any or all of these books will make an excellent and inexpensive presents to the boxing fan(s) in your life. They are especially appreciated gifts if the recipient is tired of watching re-runs of sit-coms and the far-less than significant reality shows.

Being somewhat laid-up a bit of late, I should know. At least it gives me some time to try to finish my latest work, which, God willing, will bring us so much closer to curing cancer.

Of course we are all here on the Lord’s schedule and not our own.

Where’s the “Gillette Cavalcade of Sports” when you need it? Make your friend or loved one ‘look sharp’, ‘feel sharp’ and be ‘sharp.’ So how are you fixed for books? You’d better check’ to parrot an old commercial.

You and the book-gift recipient will be glad you made the right choice (or the write choice)!***

Keep punching, always….Rusty

Two important fights at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this weekend and on paper they look like easy fights to pick. But boxing matches are not fought on paper; they are fought in the ring.

In the semi-main, for the WBO Jr. Welterweight title, Tim Bradley, 27-0 (11) takes on always tough Cuban veteran Joel Casamayor.

At 28, Bradley is 12 years the junior, and sports a record of 27-0, with 11 coming by way of knockout.

Casamayor, is 38-5-1 with 22 knockouts, but the biggest factor in this fight may just be that he is a southpaw.

That means veteran referee Vic Drakulich must be on the alert for head butts, but he has proven quite able to do that.

Bradley by decision.

The main event pits Manny Pacquiao, 32, considered by most to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world today, against ring savvy veteran Juan Manuel Marquez, 38.

Pacquiao, 53-3-2 (38), a non-stop southpaw should have the edge in the earlier rounds, as Marquez, 53-5-1 (39), has traditionally been a very slow starter.

In their previous two match-ups, and both have been close, Pacquiao had to work hard just to earn a draw and a split decision. This is not as easy a fight as some may think.

Tony Weeks is the referee in this contest, and could well have his hands full with two very strong and game competitors.

Pacquiao has the most to lose, as he (as seems always) faces a possible match-up with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a huge money-event for both.

Go with Pacquiao to take a tough, hard fought unanimous decision.

Glove 2 Glove:

Prayers for the soul of former champion and heavyweight all-time great, Joe Frazier, who passed away from liver cancer on Monday.

Prayers for the soul of former heavyweight contender Tom McNeeley, father of heavyweight Peter, who passed away in Boston.
