While the papers haven’t been signed, Manny Pacquiao’s fairly easy win over Miguel Cotto, should be the signal for a major money maker for both Pac Man and

Mayweather

No matter the victor, Mayweather thinks that since he is the big draw, he deserves a much larger percentage of the purse.

With due respect to Floyd, the Hispanic fighters pack them in far more than Mayweather. This of course could give Mayweather an excuse for not fighting Pac Man yet, and instead take on the aging but dangerous Shane Mosley. But Mosley can still fight and if he stops Mayweather, the really big money goes out the window.

I just don’t see that happening. My guess is Pacquiao, a proud man, will take a decent offer and give Mayweather the bigger bucks.***

While it’s not exactly a boxing book, my good friend Johnny Ortiz has written a great must-read called “My Life Among The Icons”. This book offers a great insight into the lives of famous Los Angeles characters. You can pick it up on the bookstores on Dec. 6th.***

Olympian Andre Ward has been moving up in company but is going to get a very hard fight in his upcoming match with Mikkel Kessler, seen on ShowTime television on Saturday.

Ward, 20-0 with thirteen knockouts is 25 years old, and an advantage by fighting close to home at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

So far Ward has looked good in moving up the ladder and now faces super middleweight champion

Mikkel Kessler, 30, of Denmark. Kessler boasts a record of 42-1 with 31 knockouts. His only loss was a decision to Joe Calzaghe, something no one has to be ashamed of gets a big edge in big fight experience.

Ward has a victory over tough Edison Miranda to highlight his career.

Since both fighters are 6’1 and boast a 73” reach, there is little to separate them. Kessler seems to have the bigger punch and has fought a higher class of fighters, Ward has youth on his side and that big home court advantage.

My guess is that this is a fight that Kessler will need a knockout to win, and he does have the power. Ward, on the other hand must stay competitive and win the close rounds which he also figures to do.

My guess is that Kessler scores a TKO, but Ward comes out the ultimate winner by gaining some much needed experience against a solid champion.***

Prayers for the soul of Pete Melendez, 76, who passed away in El Paso, TX…Pete won the Texas Golden Gloves in 1953 and was a great boxing guy.

Prayers asked for Oscar Terrell, brother of champion Ernie, who has fallen into ill health.

Prayers for cut-man Chas Hank Henry who is down but not out in his battle against cancer. Hank would love to hear from boxing fans everywhere, and you can write to him at 468 Copper Creek Circle, Pooler, GA. 31322.

Also prayers the recover of long-time UK manager/promoter Frank Maloney, 55, who reportedly has suffered a heart attack and is in the hospital.
