By Tom Donelson (Boxing Writers Assc.) On Cinco de Mayo, Mexican upcoming star Saul Canelo Alvarez faced Shane Mosley, the old veteran. The first round was a feeling around round as Mosley managed to get off punches a little quicker while Alvarez waited nearly half of the round to throw his first punch.

In the fifty years I have been connected to boxing, I have been blessed to have met some wonderful people in the sport and Eddie Perkins is one of those wonderful people. Eddie passed away on the evening of May 10, 2012 at his home surrounded by family; he was 75. I had the esteemed honor to be chosen to be Eddie's presenter when he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame on October 14, 2006.

Adrien Broner / Eloy Perez
Marcos Madiana / Devon Alexander

By David Tyler
doghouseboxing.com

Boxing expert, David Martinez is paying doghouse boxing another visit. This time to provide expert analysis of this Saturday’s fights on HBO at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

David Tyler : David, I am looking forward to Saturday’s HBO Boxing After Dark. I believe these are two quality fights. Your thoughts about this fight card?
David Martinez : The fight card will feature two very promising fights. I am impressed that HBO will start this year’s Boxing After Dark fights with four really good boxers.

DT : I like the Adrien Broner/ Eloy Perez match-up. One of these two guys will take a giant leap forward with an impressive victory. Agree?
DM : Certainly I would agree. Adrien Broner has a great opportunity to be one of boxing’s next superstars. Both of these fighters have undefeated records but Eloy Perez has two draws and one no-decision. As I examine the resumes of both fighters…it’s the knockout percentage that gets my attention. Broner has a 22-0 record with 18 knockouts. Perez has seven knockouts in 26 fights. We have discussed this before…on the surface it looks like one fighter has more power than the other guy…maybe that’s true but you really have to take a close look at the opponents and their records.

DT : So I shouldn’t take it for granted that Broner will score a knock out?
DM : Both of these fighters are very good…legitimate top 10 boxers in the Featherweight division. Perez needs to be very careful during the first two or three rounds. Broner brings a lot of raw power to the ring and it’s those early rounds that will dictate if Perez has enough boxing skills to avoid those punches and counter with some shots of his own. This will be a very competitive fight.

A “capsule” look at last Saturday’s boxing!

20120219arce300 150x150 A capsule look at last Saturdays boxing! By David Martinez

WBO bantamweight champion Jorge Arce avenged a 2009 draw with former titlest Lorenzo Parra with a 5th round knockout win in their non-title fight in Mexicali, BC, Mexico.

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko won a hard, but unanimous, decision over Dereck Chisora. The bout was held at the Olympiahalle in Munich, Germany.

Paul Williams rebounded from his less than stellar performance in July 2011 against Erislandy Lara to win a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision over Japan’s Nobuhiro Ishida in their junior middleweight bout.

Undefeated IBF light-heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud reatined his title with a “controversial” 12 round split decision over former WBA champ Gabriel Campillo. The official scorecards were 116-110, 114-112 for Cloud and third card had it 115-111 for Campillo. My “unofficial” scorecard had Campillo winning the fight 114-112.

Monzon vs. Benvenuti II

Benvenuti crop 150x150 Monzon vs. Benvenuti II By Jim Amato / Senior Boxing Writer

Nino Benvenuti may be considered among the best amateur boxers of all time. He had a great professional career too. His first loss was on a highly disputed decision to Ki Soo Kim. He would win two out of three in a legendary middleweight trilogy with the highly respected Emile Griffith Eventually though his star would diminish..

There was a non title draw in 1968 against Akron, Ohio’s rugged Doyle Baird. It was a fight many thought Doyle won. Then came a loss to the terrific Dick Tiger. Then a life and death DQ win over Fraser Scott. Nino was then cut and on the verge of losing before he landed a left hook on slick Luis Rodriguez to retain his title. In Nino’s next bout he was halted by Tom ” The Bomb ” Bethea. Benvenuti had obviously under rated Bethea the first time around as he whipped Tom good in a rematch. Still you could see Nino was not the fighter of days gone by.

In November of 1970 enter Argentina’s Carlos Monzon. A disputed draw against the feared Bennie Briscoe earned Carlos a rating. Still Carlos was not considered a serious challenge to Nino’s crown. WRONG !!! Maybe Nino was on the downside of his fabulous career. Maybe a prime Benvenuti would have fared better against Monzon In my opinion Nino is lucky he met Monzon when he did. Any sooner would have resulted in the end of Nino’ s title reign. Make no mistake about it folks, Carlos owned Nino.

David Interviewed by DogHouseBoxing.com

old boxing pic 150x150 David Interviewed by DogHouseBoxing.comDavid was recently interviewed by David Tyler, boxing writer for www.doghouseboxing.com. We’ve been given permission to display that interview here. Enjoy!

~
David Tyler:  David, what qualifies someone as a boxing historian?
David Martinez:  Somebody that religiously, daily, every minute of their life, is passionately devoted to the sport of boxing.

DT:  How many years have you accumulated using your criteria as a historian?
DM:  I have about 52 years.  It’s in my life, my DNA, that’s all I do.  My house is like a boxing museum.

DT:  I noticed that on your website is a posting of your top 12 boxers.  In alphabetical order:  Muhammad Ali, Henry Armstrong, Roberto Duran, Joe Gans, Harry Greb, Eder Jofre, Jack Johnson, Benny Leonard, Joe Louis, Carlos Monzon, Willie Pep, and Sugar Ray Robinson.  How did you decide these were the top 12?
DM:  That’s my personal opinion over 52 years. All of these fighters would be ‘all time’ greats.  My decisions were easy….let me give you an example from my top Heavyweights also on the website…. people question why I rate Jack Dempsey over Gene Tunney and bring up the fact that Tunney beat Dempsey twice.  I simply say this, ‘at the pinnacle of both of their careers, I believe that Dempsey was a better fighter than Tunney.’

DT:  James Corbett lost twice to James Jeffries.  Why do you rate Corbett higher than Jeffries?
DM:  Same logic…I think that at the pinnacle of his career, Corbett was a better fighter than Jeffries.  Here’s another example, I think that Joe Frazier was a better fighter than George Foreman at the pinnacle of his career even though Foreman beat him twice. Read More »

Chavez, Jr. and Donaire win on HBO!

chavez rubio 150x150 Chavez, Jr. and Donaire win on HBO!By Tom Donelson

(Member of Boxing Writers Assoc.)

Two Mexican fighters went toe to toe most of the night in the shadow of the Alamo in San Antonio.  Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. has the curse of the being the son of the great Julio Cesar Chavez plus he faced a hungry fighter in Marco Rubio who viewed this fight as his opportunity.  Rubio had more knock outs coming into this fight but it became obvious that Rubio did not have the power to punish Chavez and Chavez pushed Rubio around the ring.

Over the first two rounds, Rubio was the busy fighter but not the more accurate fighter as he missed many shots against charging Chavez.  By the third round, Chavez used his hook to slow Rubio down and there were times that one could see the father in his son as Chavez ripped left hooks after left hooks to the body.   Rubio threw his own haymakers as they fought inside the boxing trenches.

In the sixth round, Chavez changed tactics as he boxed and move whereas Rubio looked temporally befuddled but it gave Chavez and even Rubio a break from the tough infighting that both were involved in over the previous rounds.  In the seventh round, trench warfare returned as both men simply pounded each other as Rubio threw more punches but Chavez punches had more impact.  In the final minute of the seventh round, Chavez pounded Rubio with a nice combination that included a solid right hand.

During the eighth round, Emanuel Steward observed that Rubio should move and box more since he was not a devastating puncher whereas Larry Merchant quipped that “Rubio is not as much a devastating boxer, either.”    Over the last three rounds, Chavez and Rubio nailed each other with power shots including left hooks to the body.  Chavez threw accurate right hands throughout the bout set up by his left hooks, showing that he can be a two handed puncher.  As for Rubio, he showed grit as he was never hurt by Chavez and there were times that he connected on his own body shots including left hooks but Chavez was the more accurate puncher which is why he won the unanimous decision.

For Chavez, he beat a good fighter in Rubio but he has yet to be tested by an elite fighter and while he would love to fight Sergio Martinez, he admitted in the post-fight interview that he had to fight better than he did against Rubio.  He had trouble with his weight and a DUI interrupted his training, giving one doubts if he has the same dedication as his father.  He admitted the need to stay in shape if he wants to stay in the Middleweight division. In Rusty’s Corner

rusty May 1 2010 In Rusty’s CornerRusty Rubin is a veteran boxing writer

Glad to be back after a short absence. Fortunately, for me, but not for boxing, I did not miss very much of importance.

On Feb. 4, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, what shapes up to be a great doubleheader takes place and one that will be shown on HBO.

In one match,, for the WBC middleweight crown heavy fisted Marco Antonio Rubio puts his record of 53-5 1 (46) against fast and undefeated champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. 44-0-1 (31).

Rubio, 31, is shorter and slower than Chavez, but is the bigger puncher. He also has a three inch reach disadvantage.

Great fight, I like Chavez via TKO late.

In the other bout, Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. takes on fast, hard hitting Nonito Donaire from the Philippines.

Vasquez at 27 is two years younger and shows one loss, that to Jorge Arce last year in Vegas. His record is an impressive 21-1 with 18 KO’s.

Donaire, 29, is a southpaw with a two inch reach advantage. His record is 27-1 (18).

Take Donaire by a late TKO, in another great match-up.

Glove 2 Glove:

We lost five boxing guys since my last article (and probably more that I wasn’t notified of). Prayers are asked for the souls of Angelo Dundee, 90, Brian Curtis, 74, Goody Petronelli 88, referee Wayne Kelly and Don Fullmer.

BOOK REVIEW

Fitch Book BOOK REVIEW By Jim Amato / Senior Boxing Writer

I just read a book about a man who may be the best boxer to come out of my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. As an accomplished amateur he knocked out future world light heavyweight champion Joey Maxim. As a professional fighter he defeated some of the best heavyweights and light heavyweights of that era. Men like Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Charley Burley, Gus Lesnevich,Maxim, Billy Soose and many others tasted defeat at the hands of Bivins. Jimmy even took on Joe Louis and Jersey Joe Walcott. For his great accomplishments Bivins was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1999.

The author of this book is fellow Clevelander Jerry Fitch. Jerry is a well respected boxing historian who has developed a long friendship with Jimmy and his family. This connection enabled Jerry to tell the story of Bivins and his roller coaster life and career.Along with the great text Fitch published some vintage photos that are priceless.

I’ll say say this is a “must read” for boxing fans. I feel you will enjoy it as much as I did.

BOOK NAME ~ James Louis Bivins; The man who would be CHAMPION; Author Jerry Fitch
