Let’s take another stroll down my memory lane.

Last week Rubin “Hurricane” Carter past away from prostate cancer at age 76.

I had a chance to meet this mild mannered light heavyweight contender at the WBC Convention in Las Vegas about 15 years ago. The WBC President (the late) Jose Sulaiman presented Carter with an ‘honorary’ championship belt.

Let’s take another stroll down my memory lane.

This time I must state how much I missed the Southern California based World Boxing Hall of Fame.

While it has not held any events in about ten years, for whatever reasons (I don’t ask), I miss my good friends and the friendships we made.

I attended the enshrinement events for about eight years, and met some of the finest boxing people you’d ever want to know. I’d like to see them again as I miss them all.

I was always treated very well by everyone involved and about the only complaint I had was the seats were not made for long sitting for someone with a bad back.

Let’s take another walk down my memory lane.

Some years back my wife and I were invited to attend a fight card in New Orleans. Our host was former heavyweight, now trainer Beau Williford. Although I’ve never been big on humidity, when it comes to the Big Easy and Cajun cooking, you don’t have to ask me twice.

During this trip Lois and I met and became friends with the late Angelo Dundee (whom I already knew), Deidre Gogarty, Billy Major and Suzanne Riccio Major to name a few.

Let’s take another walk down my memory lane.

This time I am going to write about my late good friend, Jack Welsh.

Jack was a long time sportswriter, living in Vegas, when we first me in the early 1980’s. He appeared to be almost as goofy as I was so it was very comfortable getting to know him.

He was a bit older than me, divorced and was good friends with a mutual friend, Lee Samuels, publicist for Top Rank.

I had heard many stories about Jack, but some were too hard to believe, but getting to know him, I found that these stories would not come close to the way Jack really was, and, with the possible exception of my best friend Sue, (AKA Woozel), was the most fun loving and unpredictable person I ever met.

No walk down memory lane this time around as a lot has transpired since my last article.

First let’s take a good look at the upcoming fight this weekend between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo.

This bout will be shown on ShowTime (PPV ) and takes place on March 8 at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. It’s also for the light middlweight title.

Canelo is coming off his first loss, but a loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. is nothing to get upset about. No one has beaten ‘money’ yet.

Sad to report the passing of WBC President Jose Sulaiman, who went down for the count at age 82.

I’m well aware that some people didn’t like Sulaiman, who ruled the organization with pretty much an iron fist, but I always found him pleasant to talk to and knowledgeable about boxing.

I believe the last time we spoke, it was briefly, shortly before the Leonard – Duran fight in Vegas.***

First, let me announce with sadness that my good friend, boxing promoter and matchmaker Moe Smith passed away in Idaho on Oct. 28. Moe was a great guy and a great friend (along with his wife Marcia). These are the tough old timers that boxing can ill afford to lose.***

Also, let me tell you of my New Years resolution, only one, which I intend to keep. I will be retiring from boxing and devote full time to my next book and taking care of my ailing wife, Lois. I will still do some fight analysis as time allows, but sticking to a regular schedule now is going to be tough.

First I’d like to extend sincere Thanksgiving holiday wishes to all those who appreciate this column. Okay, even those that don’t.***

First bit of disturbing news has been confirmed, that both James Toney and Roy Jones Junior are serious about making comebacks. Hey guys, with all due respect, please DON’T!

Okay, now that I’m back on a winning streak, let’s see if I can close the year in style.

Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao is back in the ring this weekend in what figures to be a fairly one-sided but very exciting bout.

Two for two last weekend on a couple of pretty tough fights. I still don’t feel redeemed quite yet.

The big fights on HBO this weekend and judging by the records, it could be very interesting.

To be truthful, coming out of the amateur ranks, I never thought that Andre Ward would be a world champion. I admit I was wrong and pleasantly surprised to see where his career has taken him thus far.

Ward, 26-0 (14), is 29 years old and a native of Oakland, California and he fights in Ontario, California this weekend to try to retain the WBA super middleweight title.

Sometimes I wonder how I could analyze a fight closely and miss by a mile. It happens, but of late it’s happening to me more often than I’d like.

Two big fights on HBO this weekend and they both figure to be very exciting. The fights are from Corpus Christi, Texas and figure to add up to an exciting Saturday, (Nov. 9) night of television.

The main event for the WBO jr. middleweight title figures to be a barn burner, when Roman “Rocky” Martinez 27-1-2 (16) takes on Mikey Garcia 32-0 (27).

This figures to be a classic match-up between boxer Martinez and boxer-puncher Garcia.
