I remember as if it were yesterday when, as a young boy, I first started watching boxing in our home living room on a black-and-white television set with my father and uncles. I was introduced to such fighters as Harold Johnson, Ruben “Hurricane” Carter, Gasper Ortega, Dick Tiger, Willie Pastrano, Luis Rodriguez, Carmen Basillo, Don Jordan, Tony DeMarco, and Denny Moyer, just to name a few, on the Gillette Friday Night Fights. The announcer was legendary Don Dunphy, and the opening commercial theme music for the TV show was “Look Sharp, Be Sharp”.

In the early sixties I began to attend many professional boxing shows – mainly in the Los Angeles area – at the Olympic Auditorium, The Forum, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, the Valley Music Theater, and the Reseda Country Club. Unfortunately, I just missed the Hollywood Legion Stadium as that venue closed in 1959; and I also missed a fighter that fought there many times whom I wished I could have seen fight from ringside, “The Golden Boy” Art Aragon.

Little did I know back then in 1960 that, with a devoted interest in the “sweet science”, I would evolve into the boxing historian that I have become today. A lot of changes have occurred in these past sixty-two years, but what has stayed intact is my deep love for the sport of boxing.

The question that has continually been asked of me is this:  what fights would I like to see happen in 2023?  This is what makes boxing the best it can be – when the best fighters fight the best. Here are (in order) my top five:

#1 – Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. / welterweights

#2 – Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia / lightweights

#3 – Dimitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev / light heavyweights

#4 – Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Devin Haney / lightweights

#5 – David Benavidez vs. Caleb Plant / super middleweights

Here’s a look at my P4P “sweet sixteen” ranking of today’s current boxers:

1 – Terence Crawford (38-0 / 29 by KO)

2 – Naoya Inoue (23-0 / 20 by KO)

3 – Oleksandr Usyk (20-0 / 13 by KO)

4 – Dimitry Bivol (21-0 / 11 by KO)

5 – Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2 / 39 by KO)

6 – Tyson Fury (33-0-1 / 24 by KO)

7 – Errol Spence Jr. (28-0 / 22 by KO)

8 – Artur Beterbiev (18-0 . 18 by KO)

9 – Juan Francisco Estrada (44-3 / 28 by KO)

10 – Shakur Stevenson (19-0 / 9 by KO)

11 – Devin Haney (29-0 / 15 by KO)

12 – Vasyl Lomachenko (17-2 / 11 by KO)

13 – Josh Taylor (19-0 / 13 by KO)

14 – Gervonta Davis  (27-0 / 25 by KO)

I sincerely thank you for making dmboxing.com one of your many choices in boxing. The website started in July 2007 and since then I have published 1,937 articles and features world-wide. I would also like to bring to your attention another boxing website that I endorse: myboxingfans.com. My friend Edgar Gonzalez truly does a grand job and is producer of this site. Check it out.

Happy Holidays and may the New Year 2023 bring everybody good health, prosperity and joy!
