In Rusty’s Corner

This weekend we will watch a heavyweight match between two guys who know the fight game pretty well, Sam Peter who’s only two losses were to the much taller and faster Klitschko brothers takes on “Fast” Eddie Chambers at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

Peter who can bang figures to hold his own against any of the smaller heavyweights, and Chambers, at 6’1, is in that category.

Chambers only really remarkable fights were a loss to Alexander Povetkin and a split decision win over Calvin Brock. Neither puts Peters fight losses against legitimate big men into question.

Eddie Chambers has to life up to his nickname “Fast” to have any chance against a very slow, lumbering, heavy hitter like Peter. The question now becomes does Chambers have enough speed to slow Peter down (and he doesn’t figure to get much slower) and take a decision.

I can’t see it happening. Peter might be the best non-champion out there in today’s group of heavyweights. But power and a solid chin don’t stack up well against the taller, well conditioned heavyweights of today.

Peter to stop Chambers midway.

Glove 2 Glove:

Prayers for the soul of former bantamweight champion Raul “Raton” Macias, who passed away in Mexico at age 74.

Alex Ramos, the Bronx Bomber and founder of the Retired Boxers Association, is having more health problems and needs our help, financial if possible but definitely our prayers.

Ringsports.com’s photographer Ray Luna reports that his mother, Geneva has suffered a series of strokes. Please pray for her rapid recovery.

Please pray for my Aussie mate John MacDougall, who had to admit his wife of many years to a nursing home. Both John and his wife Gwen need your prayers for recovery and inner strength.

One of boxing’s good guys, Genaro ‘Chicanito’ Hernandez has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Kudos to the WBC for taking up the battle to help pay for some of Genaro’s high medical bills. I ask you to do your share also by saying prayers for this fine young man, a true fighter and champion who represents everything good that sports in general and boxing in particular stands for.

My good friend and former President of the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Norm Cote, is in need of your prayers. Things haven’t been going well for Norm of late, as he’s been on dialysis for a while also. Norm’s a fighter and so is his wonderful wife Annie.***

On behalf of these great fighters who have given their all in our great sport, we thank you for your ongoing prayers.

If you know of any boxing people in need of spiritual uplift or prayers, just drop us a line. It’s free to all and no one will ever contact you or put your name on anyone’s mailing list.

Thanks and God bless.***
