This weekend’s feature event comes from Montreal, Canada and will be shown on Showtime TV.
This bout, for the WBC/WBO jr. welterweight crown, features Kendall Holt against Tim Bradley Jr. Two guys who are outstanding boxers and have enough power to stop the other, although neither is considered a one punch KO type of fighter.
Holt, 27, is 25-2 while Bradley, 25, is undefeated in 23 bouts.
This is clearly a fight that should be one by the better boxer, and should provide some interesting strategy. I see Bradley being the aggressor early, and if Holt can stay with him, he should take the later rounds.
It should be an exciting fight to watch, and those close followers of the game should follow what strategy each boxer uses. If Holt can get by the earlier rounds by the time the fight gets to the judges, he should be able to eke out a very close decision. Anyhow, that’s how this old guy sees it.***
As for my pick of Sam Peter to get through the fast, defensive Eddie Chambers to score a KO midway, obviously that didn’t happen.
Peter came in way too heavy and Chambers was much to fast for him. But in watching the fight on ESPN II, I can say that it wasn’t Chambers who won the fight as much as Peter who lost it.
Fight fans can hope that both fighters learn from this, which would be a marked change from most of the heavyweights out there today.
Glove 2 Glove:
Prayers for the soul of former bantamweight champion Raul “Raton” Macias, who passed away in Mexico at age 74.
Alex Ramos, the Bronx Bomber and founder of the Retired Boxers Association, is having more health problems and needs our help, financial if possible but definitely our prayers.
One of boxing’s good guys, Genaro ‘Chicanito’ Hernandez has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Kudos to the WBC for taking up the battle to help pay for some of Genaro’s high medical bills. I ask you to do your share also by saying prayers for this fine young man, a true fighter and champion who represents everything good that sports in general and boxing in particular stands for.
My good friend and former President of the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Norm Cote, is in need of your prayers. Things haven’t been going well for Norm of late, as he’s been on dialysis for a while also. Norm’s a fighter and so is his wonderful wife Annie.***
On behalf of these great fighters who have given their all in our great sport, we thank you for your ongoing prayers.
If you know of any boxing people in need of spiritual uplift or prayers, just drop us a line. It’s free to all and no one will ever contact you or put your name on anyone’s mailing list.
Thanks and God bless.***
