While Roy Jones didn’t stop Tito Trinidad during their better than expected match at Madison Sq. Garden, it doesn’t convince me that Felix Trinidad didn’t make a mistake returning to the ring, and that Jones should hang them up. Probably neither will happen.***
On Feb. 9, at the Pechanga Resort Casino, a very good match-up takes place.
One of the best, in my humble opinion, fighters around, Paul Williams, who, while not a huge puncher can bang, and has exceptional boxing talent, takes on tough Carlos Quintana.
Welterweight champ Paul Williams, a southpaw, has very long arms making it almost, if not impossible, to get inside and land anything solid. You have to be very fast to even have a chance to beat him, and that chance wouldn’t be much. His opponent, Carlos Quintana can fight, and can punch a bit, but is not fast enough to get through the great defense that Williams uses to his best advantage.
Williams by unanimous decision.***
A week later, look for a war between Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor, it’s going to be a re-match, but this time it’s Pavlik putting his undefeated tag on the line. This is the kind of a fight that makes for a great trilogy, and I can see it happening, even if Pavlik emerges the winner.
As for the injury that sidelined Kelly last month (putting his arm through a glass window), all reports are that the injury has healed and shouldn’t impact the fight. If so, Pavlik by late TKO in a barn burner.***
Glove2Glove:
Boxing lost three friends the past few weeks, former champ Ralph Dupas and the mother of boxing referee Gwen Adair passed to their rewards.
My friend Carmen Bach lost a tough and courageous fight against cancer.
Please pray for their souls.
Prayers for the return to health of cutman Joe Souza, who now is battling a very tough foe, cancer.
Your prayers seems to have worked miracles again as proved by the return to health of great boxing guy and cut man Chuck Bodak, who suffered a stroke..
Prayers for the return to health of Patti Brandenburg, wife of boxing manager Gary.
Please say prayers for the recovery of good friend and great boxing guy Norm Cote, Past President of the World Boxing Hall of Fame, who is undergoing dialysis three times a week. Norm’s a great guy and a real fighter and we have to be there in his corner.
Prayers also for former World Boxing Hall of Fame President Charlie Casas who is having some severe health problems as well as one of the founders and past President, Dub Harris, who suffered a stroke.
Prayers for Audrey Talmo, wife of solid boxing guy, Ed and Helen Wambolt, wife of our own “Handsome” Danny, who is going through a tough battle. Also prayers for the recovery of Mills Lane and Denis Wilxox.
Please say prayers for Phill Grazide of Santa Rosa, CA. a big supporter of amateur boxing, who is suffering the crippling effects of rheumatoid arthritis.***
Needless to say we need prayers for the return to health of both former champs Greg Page and Gerald McClellan, both confined to wheelchairs.***
