In Rusty’s Corner

RR-cropRusty Rubin has been a boxing writer for more than 30 years and has contributed to dmboxing.com since 2007

I’m still not setting a firm deadline, but if you have stories to help with my next book, which 100% of the proceeds will be used in the fight against cancer, please get them to me as soon as you can.

I’m looking for stories of miracles, faith, and inspiration, not necessarily boxing related, to help inspire those in need and to support the effort to finally wipe out this dread disease.

For more information, please read to the end of this article.

Another barn burner set for Dallas this week (June 15th) and it’s going to be shown on HBO TV. The fight, a WBO Featherweight event, featuring two big sluggers.

The clear aggressor is Juan Manuel Lopez, 33-2 with 30 knockouts and the counter-puncher will be the home crowd favorite Mikey Garcia, 31-0 (26).

These two guys match up well, size wise, with a small reach advantage to Lopez, while Garcia is the slightly taller of the two.

Both losses on the record of Lopez came via technical decisions to Orlando Salida, a solid fighter who lost to Garcia in his last bout. That gives the edge to Garcia, and because Lopez has been shown to cut a bit, Garcia has that edge as well.

But, Lopez is a southpaw and is also a dangerous puncher.

I can see a lot of excitement here, with the bout possibly ending as a result of a head clash.

This looks like an exciting fight that probably will end before the final bell. The advantage goes to Garcia, and probably the fight as well.

Prayers for the soul of the father of journalist Lem Satterfield, who past away at age 94.

Prayers and a special request goes out to long-time fight judge Harold Lederman who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and temporarily removed from his post at HBO. The special request is for you to e-mail or call HBO and ask that he be returned to his post as quickly as possible. Harold is an old friend who certainly deserves better treatment than this.

Charles Rainier and former champ Wilfredo Gomez are ailing so prayers are requested.

Also request prayers for Joey Gamache Sr. trainer and promoter of former champ Joey Jr. The elder Gamache is fighting cancer.

Former heavyweight champ Ken Norton can use your prayers to help him recover from a serious illness. Also there are reports that 71 year old Muhammad Ali is not doing well. Prayers are also requested for boxing guy Reginald Boucher, father in law of boxing writer Keith Teciera. Reginald is battling cancer.

Prayers for the return to health of outstanding boxing guys Alex “The Bronx Bomber” Ramos. Alex has done much to improve the welfare of retired boxers. Your prayers for him have worked in the past. Alex is still facing some serious obstacles.

Young ex-champ Paul Williams was involved in a motorcycle accident and needs your prayers for a full recovery.

Tony Triem is also in need of your prayers, as is L.H. Dalton.

On behalf of these great fighters who have given their all in our great sport, we continue to thank you for your ongoing prayers. May the good Lord bless each and every one of you.

Glove2Glove, which had been a long-time integral part of the recently defunct Ringsports.com magazine and website. It is a wonderful program that I wish to have continued a long after I have left the sport and this earth. I want to thank Dave and Deborah Wilcox, who have offered to take over the program and promised to continue it indefinitely. Their generous offer means a lot to me. We always welcome new members.***

Thanks and God bless.***
