In a one-sided fight, WBA/IBF/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (29-0-1 / 26 by KO) completely walked through top contender and former champion Jean Pascal (30-4-1 / 17 by KO) over seven rounds to retain his title belts. The bout was televised on HBO from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Kovalev clearly dropped Pascal with a hard jab in round one, but it was ruled a slip by referee Michael Griffin. He battered Pascal in every round, before trainer Freddie Roach finally called it off, keeping Pascal from further punishment.

The fight was a rematch from ten months ago when Kovalev was the winner by an 8th round stoppage. In this fight Kovalev came right out from the opening bell establishing himself with body punches and an effective jab in punishing fashion.

I can’t recall a more dominating champion at 175 pounds since Bob Foster. What is left in this division for him is a unification bout with WBC champion Adonis Stevenson (27-1 / 22 by KO); a victory over Stevenson could ultimately lead to a huge mega fight with Andre Ward (28-0 / 15 by KO) … all of a sudden the light heavyweight division has become exciting!
