Munguia Retains WBO Title and Machado “Brilliant” over Mensah to Retain WBA Title on HBO

On Saturday, July 21, 2018 two bouts of importance took place on HBO from The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas.

WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (30-0 / 25 by KO) successfully defended his title over Liam Smith (26-2-1 / 14 by KO) with a twelve round unanimous decision.

Smith was on target and won the first two rounds, but even after fighting his heart out he would not win another round in the fight.  Munguia was dominant and just too powerful; that was the difference.

Smith was certainly gutsy and definitely exposed Munguia’s defense. Munguia dropped Smith in round six with a left hook and after that, there would be no question as to the outcome of this fight.

The judges scores were 116-111, 119-110, 119-108 … Harold Lederman’s score was one-sided at 119-108 and my scorecard was 118-109.

In the HBO co-feature,  WBA super featherweight champion Alberto Machado (20-0 / 16 by KO) successfully defended his title over Rafael Mensah (31-1 / 23 by KO) winning all twelve rounds.

Machado was nothing less than brilliant, knocking down Mensah in the first round, and showed why he is a force to be reckoned with in the 130 pound weight class.

All the judges had the same score, as did I, in this fight:  120-107.

  1. Smith was gutsy. I had Munguia up 8 4 with a 10 8 giving him a 5 pt edge on my card. I found it odd that when Mensah looked to his corner Roy Jones noticed it and said that he looked like he was looking for his corner to save him, and when Max Kellerman said that it was up to them Roy jumped on him. Machado looked very sharp.
