This edition of “Pages From The Scrapbook” features my pre-fight article piece – dated June 11, 1981 – on two world championship fights … Larry Holmes vs. Leon Spinks for the WBC Heavyweight title, and Marvin Hagler vs. Vito Antuofermo for the WBA/WBC Middleweight title.
Many of my current readers don’t know that back in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, I was a very active boxing beat writer for my local newspaper, the Santa Barbara News Press, doing fight predictions and other boxing related topics.
It was truly a blessing, as it was a learning experience in the journalism field which helped me to be the best I can in producing dmboxing.com today.
Wow.! Very nice! I used to write for TAB myself covering USAREUR & European amateur scene some from my base in Germany (book writer Kregg P.J. Jorgenson was my “great chap” friend back then]
Very nice writing though.. predictions ~all~ was off (“Ha Ha!”). (Will happen sometimes).
By the way.. in Germany I introduced two big names to the world at large. James (Bonecrusher), & [*the late] David Bey.
Great stuff as always David! And for John Wilkinson, very cool! I was stationed in Germany from 88 tbru 92 and arrived just after Mercer left for the Olympics, I knoe that Crusher trained in N Carolina on their major training post. USAREUR holds a place in my heart as I watched a racquetball championshio there with my friend doing well in competition and a good friend becane USAREUR LW boxing champion.
Marvelous Marvin Hagler has died (age 66) days ago. Shocking really.
