This past Sunday, August 21, 2016 it was simply a pleasure to be a part of the Mesa SummerFest 2016 right here in my home town of Santa Barbara, California.

I had my own booth set-up displaying my boxing memorabilia and collectables and it was an honor to greet and talk boxing to the many that attended the event.

Many thanks to chair organizer Alice San Andres-Calleja for putting together such a wonderful afternoon of fun and love for everyone. All the booths, music, dancing, the train ride and guests were outstanding.

USC Boxing: Bringing A Whole New Dimension To The Words “Fight On”

On Thursday November 9th boxers from the University of Southern California blew into the Windy City to compete in an Intercollegiate Boxing Show, featuring five Universities. The event was sanctioned and approved by USA Boxing and The United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association. That’s right… Trojan Boxers! Along with all its other fabled sports, boxing is alive and well at USC.

Together with boxers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Xavier University in Cincinnati, the University of Illinois Chicago, and the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, four USC fighters stepped into the ring to compete against some of the best collegiate boxers in the Midwest. The event took place at the magnificent Union League Club in the heart of downtown Chicago. Initially, it was hard to find anybody cheering for Cardinal and Gold. But fighting in this environment only seemed to motivate the Trojans on to victory.

First to fight for USC was Patrick Carbone. He took on Kobe Rogers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Being amateur boxing, all the bouts were scheduled for three rounds of action, with this one being in the 176-pound weight division. Carbone used his superior reach and height to dominate a very tough Rogers, who threw everything he had and never quit trying to find the key to get to Carbone. In the end it was Carbone who won on every judge’s scorecard to take home a unanimous decision victory.

It’s been six years since my friend, my best friend, Frankie Rivas, passed away.  The date of his passing was April 7, 2009.  I tearfully, but honorably, delivered the eulogy at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Santa Barbara, California, for his funeral service.  Frankie was involved in boxing as an amateur boxer, referee at many local boxing shows, and gave his support to the kids in boxing gyms in our community.  I have known Frankie since my childhood days and he was the truest boxing fan I have ever known.  May his soul rest peacefully in heaven with the Lord … my friend, my best friend, Frankie Rivas.

The Spring season is officially here and it’s that time once again, as I do on a quarterly basis, to say thank you to a small team of people that help make dmboxing.com the success that it has become since the first publication on July 15, 2007.

I would like to acknowledge these people, who are: Bob Quackenbush (Lead Assistant / Proof Reader); Tom Donelson (Member Boxing Writers Association of America); Steve Corbo (Boxing Writer / Proof Reader); and Kathy Kraft (Proof Reader).   

There are three other people who are no longer with us (R.I.P.) that contributed in a tremendous way to this website, and they are Rusty Rubin (In Rusty’s Corner / Glove2Glove), Harold Lederman (Hey Harold! / HBO World Championship Boxing), and Jim Amato (Senior Boxing Writer / Boxing Historian). These men were my dearest of friends, never to be forgotten, and resting peacefully in heaven with the Lord.

I am so grateful and certainly blessed to have such a special cast of people that have contributed to the success of dmboxing.com through the years.

Ring 10 of New York … 9th Annual Gala / Fundraiser Event 2019

Boxing fans, mark this date down for a great event and for a great cause. Ring 10 of New York’s 9th Annual Gala/Fundraiser will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2019, from 11am to 4 pm, at the fabulous Marina Del Rey, 1 Marina Drive, Bronx, NY.

Tickets are $135 with ticket prices increasing to $150 after September 1st. This event will sell out!

Enjoy brunch, cocktail hour, coffee, and dessert… including top shelf open bar with a live and silent auction of boxing memorabilia. 99% of all funds raised will go towards helping ex-fighters in need of assistance.

Hello Boxing Fans!

Come out and meet the champs for a great cause … helping fighters help themselves.

The date is Sunday, May 19, 2019 and it will be a great day, as Ring 10 of New York’s fundraising event will be held at the Villa Maria Academy, 3335 Country Club Road, Bronx, NY 10465. From 1 to 4  pm, it’s Run With The Champs; then, from 4-8 pm, Las Vegas Night Gambling with John Scully’s USA Amateur Boxing Reunion taking place.

We are looking for all boxing fans, former fighters, trainers, and officials to join us. Admission is $10.00 with food and drinks available to purchase, and 100% of all proceeds will go towards helping ex-fighters get back on their feet.
