FROM THE DESK OF: David Martinez

(Winter 2023-24 Edition)

The Winter holiday season is officially upon us and as I respectfully do on a quarterly basis, I want  to say thank you to a small team of people that truly help make dmboxing.com the success that it has been since the first publication on July 15, 2007.

I would like to acknowledge these people, who are: Bob Quackenbush (Proof Reader / Photo Editing); Tom Donelson (Member Boxing Writers of America / BWAA); Kathy Kraft (Proof Reader); Steve Corbo (Boxing Writer / Proof Reader).

There were three other people who are no longer with us (R.I.P.) that were so instrumental in their contributing to this website that I must recognize and never forget them. They are: Rusty Rubin (In Rusty’s Corner / Glove2Glove); Harold Lederman (HBO World Championship Boxing / Hey Harold!); and Jim Amato (Senior Boxing Writer / Boxing Historian).

As seen in this edition, my official website hat is displayed. It is blue in color with embroidered logo on front, and website address on back. It has an adjustable Velcro strap to fit all sizes. To purchase this attractive product, kindly send $19.95 to: David Martinez Boxing, 810 Coronel Street, Santa Barbara, California 93109 – AND – the price includes FREE shipping to all USA mailing zones.

There are many who have texted or contacted me with certain questions and offered their personal opinions. I truly respect everybody, and here is sharing five (5) questions which have recently drawn attention, with my answer in response:

1 – Was there a fighter that, when you saw them for the first time, you saw that you were completely surprised upon seeing for the first time you as a technician of perfection in the boxing ring ?

***** ANSWER: Yes, actually there are two that come to mind who fought, ironically, almost five years to the date apart from each other: Harold Johnson on April 20, 1964 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and Jose Napoles on April 18, 1969 (against  Curtis Cokes) at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

2 – Who are a few boxers that come to mind that used their height to effectively manage their distance in the ring and who also had terrific straight right hand punches ?

***** ANSWER: Carlos Monzon, Alexis Arguello, and Thomas Hearns

3 – Who did you have winning the recent Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko fight ?

***** ANSWER: Lomachenko / 115-113

4 – When did you first attending a LIVE fight and who fought ?

***** ANSWER: Danny Valdez vs. Tony Herrera, June 15, 1961, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California / Referee Joey Olmos

5 – In your boxing collection of many collectable fight programs, which one has some sentimental meaning ?

***** ANSWER: There are many, but I’d say the one from my good friend, the late Peter Del Campo who attended and provided me with his program from the Ike Williams vs. Enrique Bolanos, World Lightweight Championship Fight at Wrigley Field, May 25, 1948, Los Angeles, California

On another note of interest, I have posted for viewing my personal current P4P Rankings. My intent isn’t to change the minds of others, but actually to respect and gladly welcome others input and choices, just as they might respect my honest, sincerest selections. To view my lists, simply go to the Categories section and click onto P4P Rankings – Current.

On a closing note, I subscribe to many other boxing websites and boxing blogs. I would like to recommend one site which I endorse, MyBoxingFans.com. My friend Edgar Gonzalez does a fine job as founder and publisher, and it is truly worth a look.

Here’s wishing everyone a safe and blessed upcoming Happy New Year 2024. It is simply my pleasure to serve you, and thank you kindly for supporting and making www.dmboxing.com just one of your choices in boxing – it’s much appreciated!
