This Saturday, September 17, in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. makes his yearly appearance by taking on hard hitting Victor Ortiz in match televised on HBO Pay-Per-View.

Ortiz surprised the boxing world with an upset of then undefeated Andre Berto, in his last fight, earning him this match.

I always wonder why a guy who can earn so much money doesn’t fight more, but the record does show he has some external legal problems. It has also been noted by former promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, that Mayweather seems to have some mental problems as well. This remark has been dismissed by Golden Boy Promotions.

Ortiz, 24 is ten years the junior of Mayweather, but although one can question his defense (or lack of) you can question his punching power or his heart.

The fight itself is a good one for Mayweather to take, as Ortiz, 29-2 with 22 knockouts, like Manny Pacquiao (rumored to be his next opponent), is a hard-hitting southpaw. Continue reading In Rusty’s Corner

ERIK MORALES … another title fight!

By David Martinez / Boxing Historian

In August 2007, former WBC / WBO super bantamweight (122 lbs) champion, WBC featherweight (126 lbs) champion, IBF junior Lightweight (130 lbs) and WBC super featherweight (130 lbs) champion Erik “El Terrible” Morales retired from boxing and the end career of a great champion fromMexico was put to rest.

But after a two year, seven month retirement, and to the disagreement of many boxing experts including myself, Erik made a comeback.

So, after a few fights against mediocre opponents, last April Erik fought the hard-puncher Marcos Maidana in a junior welterweight (140 lbs) bout.

Again, the boxing experts, including myself, were in agreement that it was a huge mistake and risk by an older Morales.

In a shocker, Erik took the younger Maidana the full 12 rounds in an interim title fight, and lost by decision in what I consider a candidate for fight of the year. Continue reading ERIK MORALES … another title fight!

This Saturday, September 10, in Poland, Vitali Klitschko, the senior of the two world heavyweight champion brothers, puts his title on the line in a match televised on HBO.

His opponent, Tomasz Adamek, 34, and a native of Poland, comes in with a 44-1 record with 28 knockouts.

Vitali, 6 years older, enters the match with a 42-2 record with 39 of them coming via the KO route.

Heavyweight matches are usually prone to upsets because we know at that weight, every punch has some power.

That gives Adamek a pinchers chance. But that, his youth and the home court advantage are about all he has the edge in.

Klitschko, always in shape, at 6’ 7” has a five and a height advantage and a five inch edge in the reach department.

Unless Vitali grows old in hurry, or the judges lean towards the local favorite, Klitschko should win via a unanimous decision.

Can Ortiz Beat Mayweather?

By Tom Donelson
Member of Boxing Writers Association & Internationl Boxing Research Organization )

Can Victor Ortiz beat Floyd Mayweather in their upcoming match? The answer is yes in the sense that any one can win a fight but no one is going to bet on Ortiz. Mayweather is the overwhelming favorite and for good reason. He is one of the best pound for pound fighters over the past couple of decades and Mayweather have yet to taste defeat.

Mayweather often intimidated fighters not with his power but speed.  He dominated his opponent with his defensive mastery plus a fast hand which counters his opponents before they could even launch an attack.  He has had very few close fights, the last being against Oscar De La Hoya, which was a split decision victory and two close fights with Jose Luis Castillo. Never has Mayweather been in what was considered a war and he have avoided many bruising victories.  He often comes out of fights with his face unscratched.

Mayweather has one chink in his armor, he is 34 years and his last fight was 16 months ago and this could dim just enough the speed and timing.   Victor Ortiz aggressive style is similar to Castillo and he could challenge Mayweather by forcing the fight to go at a first pace.   Ortiz showed against Berto that he had the heart that many felt was missing after he went toe to toe against a determined foe.  He dominated most of the action and even knocked Berto down twice to garner a unanimous victory.  In that same fight, Ortiz had to come back from being down in the sixth against the quick handed Berto. The sixth round showed the maturity of Ortiz as he no only survived a near loss but he came back in that round to knock Berto down and took control of the fight back.

Mayweather has the experience in big fights and his skills levels are beyond most boxing mortals but at 34, even the greats show sign of morality.  This is Ortiz opportunity for a victory that could vault him into the elite junior welterweight and puts him into position for other big fights

It’s been a long, hot summer and it’s still got a way to go….Hope you’re all well and enjoying it.

At the Hard Rock in Las Vegas this Saturday, on Showtime TV, Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko put it all on the line for the IBF bantamweight crown.

Mares, a native of Mexico, now living in Southern California, sports a record of 21-0-1 with 13 knockouts.

Agbeko, a hard hitter from Ghana brings another strong record into the ring, 28-8 (22).

Agbeko is only 28, but he has fought most of the iron in the bantamweight division and done well against them.

Mares 23, doesn’t have quite the same caliber of opponents, but he is exciting to watch in the ring.

This week on July 9, in Carson, California, Brandon Rios puts his WBA lightweight title belt up against fast and tough foe Urbano Antillon.

The fight, televised on Showtime, should be action packed, and features a solid undercard as well.

It’s not an easy fight to call. The champion, Rios, 25, 27-0-1, (19), stands 5’8 and has a 1” height advantage over the challenger.

Antillon, 28, sports a record of 28-1 with 30 knockouts, just seems to impress more and more with every fight.

Antillon has the bigger reach by three inches and has faced tougher foes.

It’s a hard fight to call. Both fighters are from Southern California so there’s no home field edge here.

I’ll go with the older Antillon to win a hard fought decision in a very close and exciting fight.

Congratulations to my friend David Martinez who next week on July 15 will celebrate four years of success with his website dmboxing.com

In Rusty’s Corner ~ Klitschko v. Haye

Rusty Rubin is a veteran boxing writer

This week on July 2, in Hamburg, Germany, Wladimir Klitschko puts his IBF and WBO belts up against fast and hard hitting David Haye and his WBA belt.

Klitschko is taller by 3 1/2” and has a 3” longer reach, but Haye does have power, although he doesn’t show much one-punch ability to take his opponent out. At 35, he’s also five years older than Haye and has fought better name fighters.

The question with Klitschko in the past has been his chin, which seems to have held up well in recent fights. Being knocked out does not equate to having a glass jaw.

As I see it, Haye has to wear Wladimir down in order to have a decent shot to win, and unless his legs betray him, I don’t see that happening.

Klitschko by decision or late stoppage.
